International Baccalaureate Program and Electives

Welcome to Beechwood Middle School!

Beechwood Middle School is an authorized International Baccalaureate World School. The IB program, in addition to specialized curricula, aims to develop inquiry, acquire knowledge, and global citizenship, and intrinsic motivation. Students take the core subjects of Language Arts, Math, Physical Education, Social Sciences and Science, as well as IB Prep/STEM, Spanish, and Visual Arts. Our middle school students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them, not only for high school, but college, career, and life.

At Beechwood Middle School, we value a well-rounded education. As part of the International Baccalaureate Program, all students take the following courses throughout their three years of middle school.

  • IB Prep/STEM
    • Project based learning with interdisciplinary units of study covering all subject areas, which allows students to display ingenuity and creativity and to devise practical solutions to given tasks by following the design cycle.
  • Cultural Connections
    • Cultural Connections I (6th Grade)
      • Students learn about: International Baccalaureate Areas of Interaction, multiculturalism, basic Spanish vocabulary and simple phrases, and verb conjugations for conversation, art and artists from Spanish speaking cultures, as well as use of art mediums (i.e. pastels, watercolors, paint, etc.).
    • Cultural Connections II (7th Grade)
      • Students learn about: Character Traits, World Mindedness, Spain, Mexico, The Caribbean, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, multiculturalism, basic Spanish vocabulary and simple phrases, verb conjugations, art, artists, use of art mediums (ie. pastels, watercolors, paint, etc), public speaking, acting, research, electronic publishing.
    • Cultural Connections III (8th Grade)
      • Students learn about: Character Traits, multicultural artists, Cultural studies – nationality and language and immigration, education (schooling and literacy), health (disease), religions and traditions, dress and pass times (art, music, sports) and responsibilities (chores), food and air and water and electricity, money and possessions and politics and gender roles and family.

The Performing Arts are an integral part of the International Baccalaureate Program. In addition to the courses above, all students choose a Performing Art elective from the following courses:

  • Band/Orchestra
    • Students learn to play and improve their skills on an instrument of their choice, including flute, clarinet, saxophone, violin, viola, and percussion.
  • Choir
    • Students strengthen their voices through various exercises and learn to harmonize with a group. They also learn poise and demeanor as they have multiple opportunities to perform in front of an audience.

  • Theater Arts
    • Students develop an appreciation for theater and the inner workings of a musical theater production. Whether backstage or on stage, students take responsibility for their roles and build confidence in themselves to complete their duties. This year, students put on spectacular rendition of Annie at the Curtis Theater.
 

 

  • Creativity Academy
    • Students use a variety of methods to document life and learning through portfolio.
  • Study Skills
    • Students learn effective organization, note taking, and study skills to enable them to be successful in core classes.
